Artificial intelligence holds extraordinary promise for transforming organisations, yet many AI initiatives fail long before they reach meaningful impact. In my consulting work, I repeatedly observe a pattern: AI systems are often planned, built, and deployed by small, homogenous groups. These are typically technologists, senior leaders, or decision-makers who inadvertently design solutions for people who look like them, think like them, and earn what they earn. The result? Tools that don’t meet the needs of operational staff, frontline workers, or clients. In some cases, they even deepen inequality.
This is a personal concern of mine, as I have witnessed numerous instances where AI and automation solutions, despite good intentions, fail to genuinely serve the operational staff and clients they are meant to assist.

Human Resources, for instance, is crucial for ensuring upskilling, managing workforce transitions, promoting fairness, and preparing for cultural shifts.
Change management specialists are vital for guiding behavioural shifts and fostering adoption, while compliance and legal teams safeguard against regulatory breaches, inherent biases, and ethical failures. Finance experts are needed to rigorously test ROI assumptions and prevent spiralling costs, and crucially, operational and frontline teams must verify that the solution genuinely addresses real-world problems. Customer-facing staff provide invaluable insights, reflecting the lived experiences of the end-users.
Without these diverse voices, AI initiatives risk becoming elegant in theory but utterly impractical in real-world application. A chatbot designed without input from call-centre agents is likely to fail, just as a predictive model built without finance input will miscalculate value, and a workflow automation created without operational insights will falter on day one. AI succeeds only when it is grounded in the full complexity of an organisation, not solely on the assumptions of its most senior voices.
INSIGHT AND ANALYSIS
Beyond multifunctionality, the second critical pillar often missing in many organisations is diversity – encompassing culture, ethnicity, gender, age, socioeconomic background, and life experience. This matters profoundly because AI inherently inherits the worldview of its creators. If a team is homogeneous, their collective assumptions, frustrations, values, and pain points become inadvertently embedded within the technology. They can unintentionally build solutions tailored for people who share their digital literacy, their salary level, their access to devices, their linguistic patterns, or their specific privilege and cultural frame.
In contexts like Africa, this becomes particularly dangerous. AI must be designed to serve multilingual communities, under-resourced environments, informal workforces, rural populations, and individuals with varying literacy levels. When development teams lack this crucial representation, the technology risks failing the very people it is intended to uplift, exacerbating existing inequalities rather than alleviating them.
I have personally witnessed countless deployments where tools designed in executive boardrooms simply do not align with the realities on the ground, especially for those in operational roles or for customers facing entirely different pressures than those who conceptualised the solution. This is not merely an oversight; it is a systemic issue that impacts the effectiveness and ethical standing of AI.
IMPLICATIONS
A lack of both diversity and multifunctionality does more than just inconvenience users; it introduces significant risks. It can lead to biased AI outcomes that reinforce existing inequalities, poor adoption rates because staff perceive the tool as not being designed for them, and substantial wasted investment as systems become unused or rejected.
It creates ethical and regulatory exposure when AI disproportionately harms marginalised groups, ultimately eroding trust among both employees and customers. AI is not a neutral technology; it reflects the blind spots of its builders. The more homogenous the team, the more dangerous and pervasive those blind spots become. For the future of our country, ensuring diverse and multifunctional teams in AI development is not just an ethical consideration; it is a strategic imperative for building resilient and equitable technological infrastructure.
For our children, it means fostering an environment where technology is a tool for empowerment and inclusion, rather than a perpetuator of existing divides.
